State Tournament Summary

It is the ninth appearance for East Grand Forks (25-2-1) and they enter the 2014 State Tournament as a favorite. The Green Wave seeded #1 and ranked #1 in the final poll were matched against the useeded Spartans from Orono (19-9-1). The Green Wave came out flying in pursuit of their first ever championship jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and were not be caught winning going away 5-1.
East Grand Forks’ Reed Corbid scored on a rebound off a shot by Jace Pesch at 2:18 of the first. Four minutes later teammate Tanner Tweeten got credit for a goal actually knocked in by a Orono player as he attempted to remove it from the crease. Tweeten, only a a sophomore, scored got his second of the game with a 1:45 left to play. The Green Wave’s domination was further evident by their 16-5 advantage in shots, and the 21-2 advantage they held in faceoff wins.
Orono came out and played a strong second period, outshooting East Grand Forks 7-4 and getting the only goal of the second. David McCuskey was the benefactor as the Spartan’s forced a turnover by the Green Wave defense to make it 3-1. East Grand Fork responded with a strong final period, getting goals from Nick Ranten, and Bowen Dixon to seal the victory.
Green Wave net minder Josh Weber faced only 14 shots, but was solid when he needed to be making some key saves before his teammates put the game away .East Grand Fork will next play in Class A’s second semifinal on Friday.
Orono will play at noon Thursday at Marriucci Arena on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota.
