State Tournament Summary
By MSHSL  Staff
The top-seeded Pirates of Park Center are taking some major booty home from Williams Arena. In their first state tournament appearance the Pirates won their first state championship but needed three overtimes to complete the accomplishment. The No. 3-seeded Marshall Tigers stayed with the Pirates throughout, eliminating their 5-point halftime deficit to even the score after 36 minutes. Marshall actually had a 2-point lead late in the second half until Park Center ninth-grade guard Danielle Schaub sunk a jumper just before the buzzer to force the overtimes. Each team added 4 points in the first 4-minute overtime and 3 points in the second overtime. What turned out to be the game-winner was a free throw by ninth-grade guard Ann Simonet with 21 seconds left in the third overtime. Schaub added another about 15 seconds later to pad the lead. A Marshall turnover following a defensive rebound of Schaubís missed second free throw sealed the win for Park Center. Simonet finished with a game-high 26 points plus 5 steals. Senior forward Cayla McMorris added 21 points and ninth-grade center Mikayla Hayes contributed 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The Pirates finish their season at 26-5. Marshall, which finishes at 30-2, was led by senior Kenzie Beekman with 20 points and senior Hannah Bennett added 16 points. This game was the first multiple-overtime championship game in the history of the state tournament.
