State Tournament Summary

The Hermantown Hawks (26-2-1) of Section 7A displayed a smothering forecheck that led to relentless pressure that gave the Hawks a dominating 8-0 victory. Senior forwards Nate Pionk and Ryan Kero and led the attack for Hermantown. They each had hat tricks in the game, along with three assists apiece. Kero started the scoring when he found the back of the net at 3:15 of the first period on a pass from Pionk to the slot. Pionk got the next two assisted by Kero, and the Hawks led 3-0 after one. The rink appeared to be slanted downward toward the Spring Lake Park goal with Panther goalie Aaron Furlano facing numerous odd man advantages throughout the game. The Hawks fired 50 shots at the Spring Lake Park net. The margin could have been greater without great goaltending from Furlano. Hermantown also displayed offensive balance as 15 different Hawks’ had at least two shots on goal in the game. The other two Hawk goals were on shots from the point, one each by Wyatt Aamodt, and Ryan Sandelin. Seven of the eight goals were at even strength. Only Pionk’s second goal came on a first period power play, one of just two man advantages enjoyed by Hermantown. Hawk goalies Luke Olson and Cade McEwen shared the shutout win, but faced only a total of 10 shots for the game. Hermantown will face the winner of St. Cloud Apollo and Breck School in a 1pm game Friday afternoon.
