MINNEAPOLIS -- Leading virtually from start to finish, top-seed Orono pulled away in the second half for a 70-42 victory over Thief River Falls in a Minnesota State Girls’ Basketball Tournament Class AAA quarterfinal game on Thursday evening at Target Center.

Kiera Nelson led a balanced scoring attack for Orono (29-1), scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Meghan Mandel scored 13 points with a game-high 11 rebounds, to go along with four steals and two blocked shots. Rachel Rudd scored 11 points with three assists, and Danielle Jorgenson scored nine points with four rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

For Thief River Falls (26-3), Madison Brekke had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while also recording two steals and a blocked shot. Meleah Biermaier scored 11 points with eight rebounds and three assists, and Kylea Praska scored eight points.

The Spartans allowed just one Prowler lead early in the game, slowly pulling away to a double-digit lead. Orono led 35-24 at halftime, and expanded the lead to as many as 28 points down the stretch.

Orono shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field, while Thief River Falls shot 30.8 percent (12-of-39). The Spartans forced 22 Prowler turnovers, which they converted into 29 points.

With the win, the Spartans will advance to a Class AAA semifinal, facing No. 4-seed Marshall on Thursday at 12 p.m. at Williams Arena.
