Tuesday was another exciting day at the Metrodome, with the final two soccer state semifinal games played. Three third-place games were also held Tuesday, and we will return to the dome on Thursday for a state championship quadrupleheader.

Soccer is just one part of the postseason formula this week. While football and volleyball section titles are being decided around the state, the state cross-country championships will be held Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

The Class 2A girls race will kick things off Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the 2A boys race at 11 a.m. The Class 1A races will be held in the afternoon, with the girls at 1 p.m and the boys at 2 p.m.

The cross-country championships are always a fun affair, with large enthusiastic crowds, lots of colorful signs and banners and great competition. And there is no admission charge!

Returning to soccer, here’s a rundown of Tuesday’s Class 2A girls semifinal doubleheader…

Lakeville North 1, Burnsville 0: In a game that appeared to he headed to overtime, North’s Olivia Bruce scored from very short range with 6:08 left in the second half after a corner kick and scrum in front of the goal. That was one of the few solid scoring chances for either team in a game that was dominated by defense. North (15-2-3) finished with nine shots on goal and the Blaze (17-1-3) also had nine shots.

Minnetonka 3, Eden Prairie 2 (two overtimes): The Skippers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score in regulation, then won it in two overtimes when Maggie Crist scored the winner. Minnetonka (16-2-2) will meet Lakeville North for the state title Thursday. Eden Prairie (12-6-2) will play Burnsville in the third-place game.
